What is an obstacle course at El
Laurel?
It is a series of physical challenges designed
to develop teamwork abilities and to increase
personal confidence to assume greater risks. This
obstacle course includes ground initiatives, low
and high ropes course (includes a pamper pole,
climbing wall and canopy).
The ground initiatives and the low ropes
present physical challenges designed to be solved
by groups. These events require creativity,
leadership, good planning, clear communication,
and effective utilization of group's resources.
The purpose is to create "team spirit", new
potential and synergy in the group, trust, open
communication, and a firm base to reflect and
analyze the experiences lived within a framework
that fosters individual and group growth.
The higher ropes are made up of a series of
obstacles built higher from the ground amongst
the trees. They are designed to be solved in
triads, pairs or by individuals, and represent
real psychological challenges.
The experience of running risks joins people
together. After living the experience people are
anxious of talk about it and to share their
thoughts and feelings. The results are a strong
sense of community, shared values and higher
levels of trust amongst the group members.
The obstacle course provides a great framework
for deep interpersonal knowledge. Each lesson
learned is a step further toward personal
development and growth.
The purpose of the ropes course is to help
identify and develop those attitudes and
behaviors that optimize the team's collective
force.
The experiences attained on the ropes course
provide metaphors for every day life. They expose
the team's strengths and weaknesses. Well trained
instructors support the members in the discovery
process and help them examine the consequences or
results of their actions so that the team may
adjust its strategy and operate more
effectively.
